During Memorial High School’s graduation, Austin Metcalf’s twin brother accepted his posthumous diploma which led to a thirty-second standing ovation.
FRISCO, Texas — Memorial High School’s graduation ceremony on Thursday included an emotional tribute to a student who was killed more than a year ago.
Austin Metcalf, a junior at Memorial High School, was stabbed and killed during a track meet in April 2025. Another student, Karmelo Anthony, faces a murder charge. His death shocked the North Texas community and especially the school.
During Thursday’s ceremony, Austin’s twin brother, Hunter Metcalf, accepted a posthumous diploma on his behalf.
After receiving his own diploma and recognition, Hunter walked off the stage before returning moments later to accept Austin’s diploma in his brother’s honor.
The moment drew a standing ovation from the crowd that lasted about 30 seconds.
The Metcalf family remains under a gag order connected to the ongoing criminal case and has not spoken publicly about the graduation ceremony.
The murder trial tied to Austin’s death is scheduled to begin on June 1.
