In the weeks and days leading up to the May 26 runoff election, campaigns have increasingly turned bitter on both the right and the left.

In this runoff election primer, Jason Whitely and Jason Wheeler turned to Votebeat Editorial Director Jessica Huseman and Fort Worth Star Telegram columnist Bud Kennedy for answers and everything else you need to know before heading to the polls.
There are a number of high profile races in this May runoff. Perhaps the most notable is the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate seat held by Sen. John Cornyn as he tries to fend off a challenge from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Another notable race is the Democratic primary for the new District 33 seat, as U.S. Rep. Julie Johnson looks to stay in the House and Colin Allred looks to return to the House.
Other notable runoffs include the Republican primary for Texas Attorney General, since Paxton is leaving the post to run for Senate, as well as the Democratic primary for Texas Attorney General, the Republican primary for Railroad Commissioner and the Democratic primary for Lieutenant Governor.
