Houston man accused of strangling pregnant wife taken into custody overseas, says attorney

According to attorney Dick DeGuerin, his client fled to Canada and then flew to Italy, where he’s now in custody.

HOUSTON — A court hearing is scheduled for Tuesday for a man accused of killing his pregnant wife. But he won’t be there because he apparently fled the country.

Lee Gilley’s defense attorney, Dick DeGuerin, tells us his client cut off his ankle monitor and fled to Canada before flying to Italy, where he’s currently in custody.

Prosecutors say Gilley killed his wife in their home in the Heights back in 2024 but claimed she had died by suicide. He was arrested several days later after the medical examiner determined Christa Gilley had been strangled.

DeGuerin, who plans to be in court on Tuesday, said he does not know when Gilley left the United States or how long he had been out of the country.

Gilley’s trial was set to begin next month. We’ll let you know what happens in court tomorrow.
