Deputies in Spokane recover $70,000 stolen metal T-Rex statue buried underground

The dinosaur, due to its extreme size and weight of about 400 pounds, had to be towed out of the ground by tow trucks.

SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash — Deputies in Spokane County have recovered a $70,000, 400-pound metal T-Rex statue that had been missing for months.

The statue was stolen from its perch in north Spokane County on March 8. The statue is a custom-made metal dinosaur that owners say costs approximately $70,000 to replace.

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office had received tips regarding a look-alike statue that was riding around in a black SUV and was being posted on several social media platforms. This was deemed not to have been the original statue, so the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office continued its “dino hunt.”

On May 22, the sheriff’s office received an anonymous tip regarding the whereabouts of the stolen T-Rex. The information pointed deputies to an area nearly 30 minutes north of where the statue was originally taken from.

With the “unsuspecting and uninvolved” landowners’ permission, deputies carefully uncovered and found the T-Rex buried in the dirt.

The dinosaur, due to its extreme size of 3 1/2 feet and weight of about 400 pounds, had to be hauled out of the ground by tow trucks. The statue was then returned to his owners, who are currently working to repair the minor damage he sustained during his adventure.

Spokane County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating the theft and have not arrested or charged anyone.

At this time, it is unknown when the statue will be returned to its perch.
