A 13-year-old told her therapist what was happening to her at school. Her mom is now speaking out against Cy-Fair ISD.
HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A Cy-Fair ISD mother says her 13-year-old daughter was sexually assaulted by a fellow student on campus, and that school administrators failed to take action even after she and her husband reported the incident.
The mother, whose identity is being withheld to protect her daughter, says the alleged misconduct escalated rapidly over the course of just a few school days.
“By last Monday or Tuesday he was touching her upper thigh,” she said. “By Wednesday he was typing in the Google Chat, ‘Do you want to be my girlfriend?’ She said sure. Right after he asked her if she was a freak. She said, ‘kind of.’ She said, ‘Mom I felt so uncomfortable, it’s not how I meant it to be.'”
The mother shared text messages she says were exchanged between her daughter and the boy, in which he allegedly continued pushing the conversation in a sexual direction. In one message, the mother says the boy appeared to acknowledge what had happened in class.
“He sent her a text saying, ‘I’m sorry I made you touch me’. And this was during the class period.”
The daughter later disclosed to her therapist what she said was happening at school. According to her mother, the girl said the boy had placed a jacket over his lap and pulled her hand over, and that she had been touched by him multiple times.
The morning after the girl’s parents learned of the alleged incidents, the mother says her daughter and husband met with the school principal. She claims the school took no action.
“By the time we did call police and they did come to our house Monday night, they were very clear that they should have been called by the school on Friday,” the mother said.
She says she and her family felt they had to fight just to get basic protections in place for their daughter.
“We had to push way harder than we should have had to just to have this boy not be in the same classroom,” she said.
This week, the mother says the school told her she no longer needed to worry about the boy, though administrators said they could not share details about what happened to him for privacy reasons.
Cy-Fair ISD released a statement saying the incident remains under investigation. The district says safety measures have been put in place and that it is cooperating with police as their investigation continues. The district also says consequences will be applied in accordance with its code of conduct.
The mother says the family’s ordeal has left her shaken about what may be happening to other students.
“It’s hard to believe that this hasn’t happened before,” she said.
