WASHINGTON — Joan Cusack returned to the red carpet this week after 11 years out of the limelight, as the 63-year-old actress joined her co-stars for the London premiere of “Toy Story 5.”
Jessie, the cowgirl toy who was once abandoned, has been voiced by Cusack in the Disney Pixar movie series since 1999’s “Toy Story 2.”
Known for her quirky, neurotic, and frequently Midwestern supporting characters, Cusack earned two Academy Award Best Supporting Actress nominations in 1989 and 1998 for her roles in the romantic comedies “Working Girl” and “In and Out.” She has also appeared opposite her younger brother John Cusack on projects like “Say Anything …” and “High Fidelity.” Among Joan Cusack’s most memorable performances was her role as a stressed-out prep school principal who has a habit of getting down to Stevie Nicks’ music in the 2003 comedy “School of Rock.”
However, in recent years, Cusack has become more selective in the projects she chooses, especially if roles require her to appear on screen. Cusack’s most recent on-screen performance was on the TV series “Homecoming” in 2020.
According to PEOPLE and E! News, she last appeared on a red carpet at Showtime’s Emmy Eve event in September 2015.
Other Toy Story 5 actors on the London red carpet on Thursday were Tim Allen, who voices space action hero Buzz Lightyear and Tom Hanks, who plays cowboy protagonist Woody. Also on the red carpet, next to Cusack was franchise newcomer Greta Lee, who voices the movie’s antagonist, a frog-shaped smart tablet who takes on the other toys.
When does “Toy Story 5” come out?
Toy Story 5 will have a wide release in U.S. theaters on June 19. It’s been seven years since the last “Toy Story” movie came out.
