A shooting call turned into a chase. Then Fort Worth police say a man grabbed an officer’s gun before being fatally shot

A Fort Worth shooting call escalated into a police chase and deadly officer-involved shooting. One officer was also hospitalized.

FORT WORTH, Texas — A man was shot and killed by police in Fort Worth after the department says he nearly ran officers over, led them on a chase and grabbed an officer’s gun.

The Fort Worth Police Department (FWPD) said officers responded to a shooting call at approximately 4:15 a.m. Saturday in the 4200 block of Wiman Drive. While officers were there, a white SUV “drove by multiple times at a high rate of speed.” Fort Worth police said “it appeared the driver was attempting to hit officers standing near their vehicle.”

Officers tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver drove away and they pursued the vehicle in a chase, FWPD said. After about 15 minutes of chasing the vehicle, Fort Worth police stopped the vehicle using a “PIT maneuver.” Officers then approached the vehicle with guns drawn and gave multiple verbal commands, police said. According to Fort Worth PD, the man did not comply and grabbed an officer’s gun.

At that point, multiple officers fired their guns and struck him, police said.

Fort Worth PD said medical aid was provided by officers until the Fort Worth Fire Department arrived. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

An officer was injured and taken to the hospital, though the department said it was “unknown at this point how the officer was injured.” The officer was listed in good condition, according to FWPD.
