Dallas releases 400-plus responses on what to do with City Hall

The fight over the redevelopment of City Hall pits those who want to preserve the 47-year-old building by famed architect I.M. Pei against those who want to renovate

After weeks of anticipation, the city of Dallas, on May 14 released more than 400 responses it received from an open call about what to do with City Hall.

Of the 418 total responses, 85 called for the demolition of the current City Hall and redevelopment of the site in southern downtown, while 321 proposals wanted to restore the building at 1500 Marilla St.

Many of the responses for those looking to restore City Hall simply had the message “save City Hall,” with very little or no additional material. Other responses suggested the building be repaired, with one participant saying, “this process has been messy, rushed and I have little faith in half the city council, mayor or city manager.”

Council Member Chad West said any decision on the future of Dallas City Hall — specifically whether to relocate or renovate the building — will occur regardless of the Mavericks, as the council has to consider the future of the city and budgetary concerns moving forward.
