At least 23 people were injured in the shooting Sunday night that sent roughly 18 people to the hospital for care. No arrests have been made.
EDMOND, Oklahoma — The search for a potential suspect or suspects continues in Oklahoma, where a mass shooting Sunday evening at an unsanctioned lake party injured at least 23 people.
No arrests have been reported as of Tuesday morning.
At least 18 people were treated at local hospitals, but it remained unclear by Monday evening how many people had been shot. Several people were listed in critical condition, but no deaths have been reported in connection with the shooting.
One of several healthcare facilities where victims went said they were treating people between the ages of 16 and 30.
Since the night of the shooting, police have said they do not believe there is any threat to the public, but the search for a suspected gunman or others involved in the shooting is unresolved.
The unauthorized “Sunday Funday” event at Arcadia Lake in Edmond, which is about 12 miles north of Oklahoma City, was advertised online as a gathering with food, drinks, music, “good vibes, good people.”
Jeremiah Smith, an 18-year-old partygoer, estimated that about 250 people showed up for the event. Smith said the trouble began when a group of girls started arguing over boyfriends.
“It just started a whole bunch of chaos,” he said. “Everybody got scared, dudes was panicking, women was panicking, people seeing their friends fight.”
The 18-year-old said he heard shots ring out in different directions for several minutes as he ran toward the lake. Those hit included two of his friends, he added.
Edmond Mayor Mark Nash said the shooting took place at a public park where spaces can be reserved for large gatherings.
“To our knowledge, there was no reservation through the parks department,” he said.
The mayor held a press conference Monday night in an attempt to reassure the public that the community and the park were safe, and one of the more popular spots locals frequented during the summer, so much so that they designated a resource officer to patrol during the busiest months.
“I want to speak clearly to the residents of Edmond: our community remains safe,” Nash said in a statement. “Arcadia Lake is one of our community’s crown jewels; a place where families hike, camp, fish, and spend time together. That is the Arcadia Lake our residents know and love, and we are committed to keeping it that way.”
Authorities ask that anyone with information about the incident come forward.
