Where is the gas smell across Houston coming from?

Several agencies posted about the gas-like smell Thursday afternoon.

HOUSTON — What is the source of the gas odor across the City of Houston?  That’s what several different agencies are trying to find out.

The City of Tomball posted about the odor a little before 3 p.m., saying that emergency crews are responding to the smell across the greater Houston area.

The Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office says residents in the following areas have reported the smell of natural gas: Champions, Cypress, Vintage Park, Tomball, Greens Road at I-45, C.E. King area, Pasadena area, Spring, Porter, Kingwood, east Houston.

Aldine ISD posted that the odor people in that area are smelling could be related to an issue near the Houston Ship Channel and I-10 area. The district also says the odor isn’t coming from district facilities or schools.

San Jacinto College also posted about the odor near their north campus. They investigated and determined that facilities are safe at the campus.

We reached out to CenterPoint Energy to find the source of the odor people are reporting.  They sent us the following response:

“The safety of our customers and communities is our highest priority. The odor being reported near Channelview is not related to any damage to CenterPoint’s natural gas pipelines, and no major issues on our system have been detected at this time. We continue investigating all suspected leak calls we are receiving associated with this odor.

If you smell natural gas, leave immediately on foot. Once you are safely away from the area, report the possible natural gas leak to CenterPoint at 713-659-2111 or 800-752-8036.”

As soon as we hear more about the source of the odor, we’ll post it here.
