What we know about the shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego

Five people, including two teen suspects, were killed. Here is what we have learned about the shooting.

SAN DIEGO — Two teen suspects opened fire, killing three people outside of the Islamic Center of San Diego on Monday afternoon, police said. Those suspects were later found dead. 

Here’s what we know about the shooting: 

Where was the shooting?

There were numerous crime scenes that spanned multiple blocks, police said.

One shooting happened at the Islamic Center of San Diego, located at 7050 Eckstrom Ave, just south of Balboa Avenue near the 805 freeway. That’s where three people were shot and killed.

The suspects from that shooting apparently also fired shots at a landscaper near the Islamic Center, police said. That landscaper was not injured.

The suspects were later found dead in a vehicle in the middle in the 3800 block of Hatton Street.

Who were the victims in the shooting?

Three men were killed outside the Islamic Center of San Diego. One of those men was a security guard at the center, police said. 

Their name have not been released.

Who were the shooters?

The two suspects were both teenagers, aged 17 and 19, according to police.

Their names have not been released.

What happened to the shooters?

The suspects, both male, died of apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds, police said.

Did police fire at the suspects?

Police did not fire at the suspects, authorities said.

Were any children injured?

No children were hurt, police said.

What led to the shooting?

San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl said that details of the circumstances of the shooting would be released in the “days ahead.”

The shooting is being investigated as a hate crime, authorities said. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is assisting in the investigation.

Is there footage of the shooting?

Yes, the Islamic Center of San Diego has cameras that did capture the footage, police said.

How many officers responded to the shooting?

Between 50 and 100 officers responded, according to Wahl.
