Texas DPS secures $3.2M in federal funds to detect and respond to unauthorized drones during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, aiming to enhance security and public safety.
HOUSTON — The Texas Department of Public Safety is getting new funding to strengthen security ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Houston and Dallas.
DPS announced it has received about $3.2 million in federal grant money from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to improve its ability to detect and respond to drones that could pose a threat during large events.
Officials say the technology will help law enforcement spot unauthorized drones in real time and respond if needed, especially around stadiums, crowds and critical infrastructure.
“Major international events like the FIFA World Cup bring millions of visitors to Texas and place incredible demands on public safety,” said DPS Colonel Freeman F. Martin. “We will not hesitate to act against threats that put public safety at risk.”
DPS says the system can be used in fixed locations or while on the move and will help monitor airspace using radio signals and other detection tools.
The agency says it will also be able to take action against drones that are unauthorized or pose a safety risk, in accordance with federal rules.
“As drone activity continues to increase, having the ability to detect, track and mitigate unauthorized drones is critical,” said DPS Chief Pilot Stacy Holland. “We strongly encourage all drone operators to follow FAA regulations.”
Before using the new technology, DPS personnel will go through specialized training with the FBI on how to safely and legally respond to drone threats.
The funding comes as federal law expands the ability of state and local agencies to respond to dangerous drone activity, as long as they follow approved training and standards.
DPS is also reminding drone operators to follow all Federal Aviation Administration rules, including registration requirements and airspace restrictions, especially during major events.
