Sinkhole at LaGuardia airport shuts down runway, causes travel delays

In addition to the runway fixes, weather conditions also disrupted flights at the airport.

WASHINGTON — A sinkhole at LaGuardia Airport in New York City led to flight delays as workers made repairs to the runway.

LaGuardia Airport officials said the Port Authority discovered the sinkhole during its daily morning inspection of the airfield. Around 11 a.m. ET, the crews discovered the sinkhole near Runway 4/22.

The impacted runway was immediately shut down and emergency construction, along with engineering crews, worked on repairs “as quickly and safely as possible.” Officials said they were in close communication with airlines as they worked to fix runway conditions.

“The Port Authority is in close communication with airlines and airport partners and will continue providing updates as conditions evolve,” LaGuardia officials said in a post on X. “Travelers should expect delays and cancellations, particularly with forecast thunderstorms expected later today, and are strongly encouraged to check directly with their airlines for the latest flight status information.”

In addition to the runway fixes, weather conditions also disrupted flights at the airport.

As of 5 p.m. ET, 17% of flights at LaGuardia were canceled and 22% of flights were delayed, according to flight tracking website FlightAware.

The Federal Aviation Administration said LaGuardia Airport was experiencing an average delay of 1 hour and 37 minutes due to weather and thunderstorms.

LaGuardia urged travelers to check with their airline to determine the status of their flight.

The sinkhole comes nearly two months after a deadly collision between an Air Canada plane and a fire truck on the tarmac at LaGuardia Airport.  The crash killed two pilots and sent roughly 40 people to nearby hospitals.
