Sam Houston football player Will Davis dies after joining program this spring, coach announces

Davis was a newcomer to Huntsville. He played at Virginia Union before Sam Houston State this season.

HUNTSVILLE, Texas — Sam Houston State University is mourning the loss of defensive back Will Davis, according to a statement released Sunday by head football coach Phil Longo.

“It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of Will Davis,” Longo said in the statement. “Will was a beloved member of our Bearkat football family here at Sam Houston who touched the lives of everyone he knew. Will was an upbeat, positive, passionate young man who will be sincerely missed.”

Longo also expressed condolences to Davis’ loved ones.

“Tanya, the kids and I are praying for Will’s family during this difficult time,” he said.

The university did not release additional details about Davis’ death.

Davis was a graduate senior from South Boston, Virginia. He joined the Sam Houston football program prior to spring practice after previously playing at West Virginia and Virginia Union.

The defensive back was entering his first season with the Bearkats.
