Northwest Mall exterior walls demolished, making way for uncertain Texas bullet train project

Texas High Speed Rail Holdings began demolishing the 800,000-square-foot mall in early April.

HOUSTON — The demolition of the exterior walls of one of Houston’s earliest enclosed shopping centers marks the end of an era for fans of this longtime northwest Houston landmark.

Crews began exterior demolition work of Northwest Mall over the weekend, leveling most of the 800,00-square-foot building that was located at 500 Hempstead Road, near U.S. Highway 290 and Loop 610.

Texas High Speed Rail Holdings, formerly known as Texas Central, began demolishing Northwest Mall in early April, starting with the interior of the former Macy’s store. As of early May, contractors for Cadiz Development Houston LLC, a partnership under the common control of the company, had completed the demolition of the building’s interior.

The company told the Houston Business Journal on May 4 that external structural demolition would begin once demolition permits were issued by the city.

The HBJ confirmed with the Building Code Enforcement Department that all associated demolition permits for the Northwest Mall have been purchased and obtained.
