Memorial Day traffic wrapped up in Dallas as high gas prices, busy airports and global oil uncertainty shaped how some travelers got around.
DALLAS, Texas — Traffic slowed to a crawl near the High Five interchange in Dallas as the Memorial Day holiday weekend wrapped up.
AAA projected more than 39 million drivers would hit the road this weekend, even as gas prices climbed to their highest levels since the summer of 2022.
“They’re insane, that’s all you can say,” driver Isiah Johnson said.
“Everything is money anyway,” driver Yohanes Vayeh said.
The price pressure comes as global oil markets watch negotiations involving Iran and the future of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil shipping lanes.
“We’ve been close to a deal for some time now. I don’t have my hopes up. It will come when it comes,” driver Brian Sellars said.
Air travel is busy, too. The TSA expected to screen more than 18 million passengers and crew members between last Thursday and this Wednesday.
But for some Americans, the cost of getting around is changing how they travel.
For Vayeh, an Uber driver, high gas prices helped push him to go electric. He said he saves about $150 to $200 a month.
Johnson, meanwhile, decided not to travel at all for the holiday.
Asked whether he was taking a big Memorial Day road trip, Johnson said, “Absolutely not.”
