Man storms green near Scottie Scheffler during Byron Nelson Tournament, detained by officials

The man broke through gallery ropes and began yelling as Scheffler’s group finished the 6th hole at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney.

MCKINNEY, Texas — A man was detained Friday after rushing onto the green during the CJ CUP Byron Nelson tournament at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney — one of the PGA Tour’s marquee events in North Texas.

According to WFAA’s sports crew on the ground, the incident unfolded as world No. 1-ranked golfer, and North Texas resident, Scottie Scheffler and his playing partners were finishing up at the 6th hole. The man broke through the gallery ropes and began yelling before tournament officials quickly moved in and detained him.

WFAA cameras captured the moment he was taken into custody.

Images from the scene show the man was wearing a shirt with writing on it, though officials have not yet released details on what prompted him to rush the course or what the shirt said.

McKinney Police say the fan was removed from the tournament and released.

Scheffler, the defending Masters champion, was reported to not be in any danger. Play at the tournament is expected to continue.
