Texas tracks Galveston beach bacteria daily. Here’s how to check it this weekend.
GALVESTON, Texas — Texans flocking to Galveston for Memorial Day weekend can largely breathe easy when it comes to water quality, with most beaches showing low to medium bacteria levels as of Friday.
Texas Beach Watch, a state-run monitoring program, tracks levels of Enterococcus bacteria at Texas beaches daily and rates them as low, medium, or high. A check of the site shows most Galveston beaches currently sitting in the low to medium range, with one exception: the 25th Street Jetty, which is showing a high bacteria reading.
The good news comes at a welcome time for families like Shannan and Jordie Dyess, who made the trip to the island for the holiday weekend.
Shannan Dyess said the water conditions were top of mind for her family.
“We just want to make sure that the water is good when our kids swim in it and it’s a beautiful day today the water is great. It feels great and yeah, it’s good.”
Beachgoers can keep tabs on water quality throughout the holiday weekend and year-round at TexasBeachWatch.com, which updates bacteria readings daily.
Seaweed, however, is piling up on some beaches. That is also tracked daily by NOAA. See the latest map here and read more from KHOU 11.
