Galveston officer Joshua Nino, recently named “Officer of the Year,” is under investigation after a fatal shooting during a traffic stop, according to police.
GALVESTON, Texas — The Galveston police officer involved in a deadly shooting during a traffic stop this week had recently been named “Officer of the Year,” according to officials.
The shooting happened Monday along 55th Street at Avenue O, where police say an officer opened fire, killing 47-year-old Randy Martin after he became combative during the traffic stop.
Galveston Police Chief confirmed Thursday that the officer involved is Joshua Nino.
Nino is also the vice president of the Galveston Municipal Police Association, which recently recognized him as a “50-Club Officer of the Year.”
He has previously been highlighted for his work in a high-profile rescue. In February, Nino was credited with helping save a 12-year-old girl who had been kidnapped and taken to a motel, where officers later arrested a suspect.
The Galveston Police Department says the shooting is now under investigation by the Texas Rangers and the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office.
Officials have not released additional details about what led up to the use of force, other than saying Martin became combative during the traffic stop.
The investigation remains ongoing.
