‘Fought like hell’ | Houston Methodist worker attacked in Texas Medical Center garage, now recovering at home

Coworkers nearby rushed to help after witnessing a stabbing in a Houston hospital garage. The victim is now home.

HOUSTON — A Houston Methodist employee was stabbed multiple times inside a parking garage at the Texas Medical Center Tuesday morning, according to Houston police, sending shockwaves through one of the city’s busiest medical hubs.

Police say the woman was sitting in her car when a man walked up and attacked her. Several nearby employees witnessed the assault and rushed to help before first responders arrived. She was then transported to a nearby emergency room.

The victim’s mother confirmed to KHOU 11 that her daughter was stabbed multiple times but “fought like hell.” She is now home and resting after receiving stitches.

“She just got home and is resting,” the mother said.

“We never imagined anything like this could happen to our family,” she added.

The victim herself told KHOU 11 she is not ready to speak publicly about the traumatic experience, but did say she did not know her attacker.

Investigators are describing the suspect only as a man wearing a red hoodie who fled the scene after the attack. A photo circulating online shows a possible suspect, but Houston police said Tuesday evening they cannot confirm it.

In a message sent to employees, Houston Methodist said the woman is doing well and “appreciates the continued thoughts and prayers she has received.” The hospital also said it “conducted a lockdown in some of our buildings earlier today” and expects “to return to normal security operations tomorrow.” The hospital also shared safety tips with employees, urging everyone to be aware of their surroundings.

The attack has left people who work in and around the medical center shaken. Roy, who works in the area, expressed disbelief.

“Really crazy for it to happen in the medical center where we have all the police officers, all the security,” he said.

Students and interns at the Texas Medical Center said the incident hit close to home.

“Especially that you walk to come here at the hospital every day in the morning,” said Candy, a student and intern at the medical center. “So that’s scary.”

Joya, also a student and intern, echoed those concerns.

“Scary that we’re hearing about this early morning at 7 a.m. and in the daylight that these things are happening,” she said.

One bystander summed up what many were feeling.

“I hope she’s okay,” the person said.

Anyone with information on the case is urged to contact the Houston Police Department.
