Elon Musk is betting big on chipmaking north of Houston — but locals and their leaders have questions. Here’s what the Houston Business Journal found.
GRIMES COUNTY, Texas — A proposed $55 billion SpaceX facility is causing more questions than answers for both residents and commissioners voting on tax abatements.
The Houston Business Journal reached out to each of the Grimes County commissioners to discuss the proposed facility, which could even reach $119 billion of investment in future phases, and received little luck.
Three commissioners didn’t immediately answer their phones. Michael Raska, commissioner of Precinct 3, said he couldn’t comment and hung up the phone before the HBJ could ask any questions. Soon after, the HBJ received an email from Grimes County Attorney Megan Barcak asking that all communication with the commissioners go through her.
However, County Judge Joe Fauth III spoke freely with the HBJ about how the county court is navigating the complex process of negotiations for such a massive project.
“The decisions that we make today, it can be a generational change for our county,” Fauth said.
