DALLAS — North Texas voters have decided the Democratic nominee in the closely watched Congressional District 33 runoff, with Colin Allred emerging victorious over Julie Johnson.
The race drew attention across the region as former Congressman Allred sought to reclaim the seat he gave up during his U.S. Senate run, while incumbent Rep. Julie Johnson worked to hold onto her position after first winning the district.
Allred entered the runoff with momentum, after leading the initial primary by more than 7,700 votes, securing 44% to Johnson’s 33%.
District 33, which is heavily Democratic, all but ensures Allred will head to Congress following the November election.
The campaign highlighted contrasting messages between the two candidates, with both emphasizing their experience and ability to represent North Texas on the national stage.
On the Republican side, voters also narrowed their choice in a separate runoff, where Patrick Gillespie, the primary frontrunner, faced John Sims. With the runoff now decided, Allred will move forward as the party’s nominee, setting the stage for the fall campaign.
