What is ALS?
Also known in the United States as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis causes a progressive loss of neurons that control muscle movement.
Baseball player namesake Lou Gehrig and British astrophysicist Stephen Hawking also suffered from the disease. In France, ALS is often referred to as Charcot’s disease, after the 19th-century French neurologist who first identified the ailment.
