Man set apartment on fire, assaulted apartment leasing manager, police said

The suspect jumped on a desk and yelled “I’m going to kill you!” at one of the victims before stabbing them, according to police.

DALLAS, Texas — A Dallas man reportedly started a fire in his apartment and then ran into a leasing office to stab the manager, according to court records obtained by WFAA.

30-year-old Rigoberto Contreras Pirela ran into the leasing office of the Aventine at Kessler Park apartments on Tuesday afternoon, jumping onto a desk with a knife in his hand, and stabbing one of the leasing managers in the head, an arrest affidavit states.

The affidavit goes on to say Contreras Pirela was able to stab the victim several times in the head and upper back before knocking them to the ground, but the assault continued, it states.

A maintenance worker in the office put the suspect in a “bear hug”  to finally get him off of the victim, according to the affidavit. Contreras Pirela then bit the maintenance worker and broke free, reportedly attempting to slash him with the knife.

The report says when officers arrived, the maintenance worker and another witness had subdued the suspect and were holding him on the ground. Police were able to get Contreras Pirela in handcuffs and transported him to a hospital due to injuries he suffered during the struggle.

The stabbing victim was also transported for a reported “long cut on the neck and multiple cuts on the back of the head.”

During the investigation, witnesses told police that the suspect had allegedly started a fire in his apartment as a distraction while he attacked those in the leasing office. Dallas Fire-Rescue was able to put the fire out and arson investigators were called.

Contreras Pirela is being held in the Dallas County Jail on two charges of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, with a $400,000 bond.

Police have not provided an update on the victim.
