Plans are in the works at both the Charlotte Motor Speedway and Indianapolis Motor Speedway to honor Kyle Busch ahead of the Coca-Cola 600 and Indy 500.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — As the racing community mourns the loss of NASCAR legend Kyle Busch, plans are in the works at both the Charlotte Motor Speedway and Indianapolis Motor Speedway to pay tribute to the two-time Cup Series champion ahead of one of the sport’s biggest weekends.
Charlotte Motor Speedway has been displaying a photo of Busch on its Jumbotron in his honor. On Thursday, WCNC Charlotte spoke with Charlotte Motor Speedway Vice President of Communications Jonathan Coleman, who said it’s difficult to imagine the Coca-Cola 600 weekend without one of the sport’s most recognizable faces.
“An opportunity to pay tribute to all that he meant to the sport, to Charlotte Motor Speedway’s winningest driver across all three major series,” Coleman said.
The speedway plans to honor Busch’s legacy both on and off the track.
In Indianapolis, the city is preparing for the 110th Running of the Indianapolis 500.
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway displayed images of Busch on its pylon, in remembrance.
Busch won the Brickyard 400 at the track in 2015 and 2016. He made his 700th career Cup Series start at the 2024 Brickyard 400.
WTHR spoke with President of INDYCAR Doug Boles about Busch’s historic moments at the track.
“He was so good at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He loved coming here cause — for those cars — this track is so technical. And if you’re a good driver and you’ve got a good crew, you’re gonna excel here. And he went through a string where — he could do no wrong here. So, definitely missing him around here,” Boles said.
Boles also said it is important for fans to remember the passion Busch brought to the sport.
He said plans are in the works to honor Busch ahead of the Indy 500.
“We’ll do something. I don’t know exactly what it will be yet, but we’ve just gotta make sure it’s appropriate,” Boles said. “But we’ll make sure we’ve got something that includes the fans and is an opportunity for us to remember Kyle Busch.”
Formula 1 has a race in Montreal this weekend as well. It shared the NASCAR post about Busch on X and added: “A true competitor and champion.”
