Phil Collins makes rare public appearance amid health struggles

WASHINGTON — Months after musician Phil Collins opened up about his health struggles, he made a rare public appearance at Buckingham Palace.

The legendary drummer who has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame both for his work with Genesis and as a solo artist recently attended the 50th anniversary party of King Charles III’s nonprofit The King’s Trust. Collins has long been involved with the nonprofit that supports young people, becoming its first ambassador 40 years ago.

Collins attended the party with his ex-wife Jill Collins, who shared a photo on Instagram of the two of them, along with singer Rod Stewart and his wife, model and TV personality Penny Lancaster.

“Despite the downpours of torrential rain which did not seem to dampen the festivities @officialphilcollins and I were very proud and honored to be there and have a few private moments with King Charles who seemed genuinely pleased to see Phil who was the very first ambassador 40 years ago and a trustee even before that!” Jill Collins wrote.

Jill Collins also said that she and Phil Collins are working on an auction in November to benefit The King’s Trust. She said they’re donating hundreds of items from their personal archives, and Phil Collins has designed a T-shirt that will be sold with the proceeds going to the nonprofit.

In January, ahead of his 75th birthday, Collins revealed in a BBC podcast that he has a live-in nurse for 24-hour care.

“It’s an ongoing thing,” he said in the interview, per People and Rolling Stone. “I have a 24-hour live-in nurse to make sure I take my medication as I should do. I’ve had challenges with my knee. I had everything that could go wrong with me, did go wrong with me.”

“I got COVID in hospital,” he said. “My kidneys started to back up. Everything seemed to converge at the same time.”

Collins explained that he has undergone five knee surgeries and currently has only one “that works.”

“I’ve had five operations on my knee now,” he said. “I’ve got a knee that works, and I can walk, albeit with assistance, you know, crutches or whatever.”
