Meet the lucky new member of the Fort Worth Fire Department: Jake, the dog

FORT WORTH, Texas — One Fort Worth fire station is adopting a new member to their family; a homeless dog named Jake, who was left at their station over the weekend.

In a social media post, the station members say “Early on the morning of May 16th, one of the crew members at Station 8 heard a dog whining outside his bedroom window. A few of us went out to investigate and found a dog chained to our flagpole. There was a water bottle nearby with a note inside.”

The note was left by a homeless United States veteran who was looking for someone to care for Jake. In the note, the veteran stated he could no longer care for the pup if he planned to get the help he needed to better his own life.

Spouses and co-workers with the firefighters posted some photos and the note online in hopes of finding Jake a home. However, none of the interests ever turned into a forever home.

All three shifts at station 8 worked at least one day with Jake, leading to all the shifts agreeing on one thing: they would take Jake in as their own.

Jake is being well taken care of with all of the food, treats, and toys he could want. He is also being vaccinated and was even treated to a bath in the truck room.

Fort Worth Fire noted that they do not normally accept surrendered animals, and that Jake’s adoption is a rare occasion. However, the crews couldn’t help but have their heart warmed by a veteran in need and a dog with an infectious smile. “We just thought we would tell you the story of how a heartbroken man made an incredibly tough decision and everything about the moment just lined up perfectly to work out right,” said Fort Worth station 8.
