HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ series is recasting a major role for Season 2

The character appears only briefly in the first book, but will become a central figure starting in Season 2.

LONDON, UK — HBO’s highly anticipated “Harry Potter” series is heading into its second season with a casting change.

Gracie Cochrane, the young actress who portrays Ginny Weasley, will not return for the show’s next installment and the role will be recast. Cochrane and her family announced the departure in a joint statement, citing “unforeseen circumstances” as the reason for her exit.

“Her time as part of the Harry Potter world has been truly wonderful, and she is deeply grateful to Lucy Bevan and the entire production team for creating such an unforgettable experience,” they said.

HBO was supportive in its own statement. “We support Gracie Cochrane and her family’s decision not to return for the next season of HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ series, and we are grateful for her work on Season 1 of the show. We wish Gracie and her family the best,” an HBO spokesperson said.

The news comes as Season 1 is wrapping production. The inaugural season is set to premiere Christmas 2026, with Season 2 entering production this fall.

The character appears only briefly in the first of J.K. Rowling’s novels as she is not yet old enough to attend Hogwarts.

However, the Ginny becomes a central figure in the second book and later serves as Harry’s primary love interest. In Season 2, set to be based on “The Chamber of Secrets,” Ginny opens a secret chamber in Hogwarts castle, unknowingly releasing a murderous basilisk and commanding it to attack students while under the influence of the enchanted diary of Tom Riddle, the Hogwarts student who grew up to become Voldemort, the main villain of the series.

This is the first major recast for the HBO series, which selected its child actors from tens of thousands of submissions. No replacement has been announced yet. Bonnie Wright played Ginny across all eight films in the original “Harry Potter” movie franchise.

Dominic McLaughlin plays Harry Potter and Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout have been cast as Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, respectively. The series’ cast also includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall.
