LEWISVILLE, Texas — The Denton Police Department’s bomb squad was called out to Lake Lewisville on Monday after finding a pipe bomb, officials say.
According to the Lewisville Police Department, police were called about a suspicious package at Lake Park. After being shown the package, officers called the bomb squad from the Denton Police and Fire Departments.
The package was later found to be a pipe bomb, officials said, which the bomb squad found had been used at the lake recently to kill fish for an easy catch. But this practice is illegal.
Officials say the device was destroyed and discarded at the scene. The area of Lake Park where the device was found has since been reopened.
Lewisville resident Mike Reiter said in the City of Lewisville Facebook group that he found the bomb while metal detecting along the shoreline.
“I held a freaking bomb in my hand that one of you might have made and left behind,” Reiter wrote. “This was at the frisbee golf course in the swim area where kids swim all the time.”
