Dallas ISD students start petition opposing the covering of the downtown whale mural

Students with the group say the petition gained over 200 signatures in just 24 hours purely by word of mouth.

DALLAS — Several Dallas ISD students have started a petition opposing the destruction of the downtown whale mural.

As WFAA previously reported, the original artist, Robert Wyland, is threatening legal action after he says a project tied to the FIFA World Cup began covering up his mural without consent.

Students from Booker T. Washington High School decided to start their own grassroots petition to help support the marine artist’s cause.

Students with the group say the petition gained over 200 signatures in just 24 hours purely by word of mouth. The group also plans to launch a city-wide phone blitz targeting city leaders and the FIFA committee.

The students also plan to attend the in-person North Texas FIFA World Cup planning meeting on Tuesday at 2 p.m.

The organization says in part, “Dallas youth are tired of our landmarks being treated as disposable corporate billboards.”
