Target is remodeling more than 130 stores in its ‘biggest transformation in a decade’

Target announced it would invest $5 billion to remodel more than 130 stores and add 30 new stores.

WASHINGTON — More than 130 Target stores are undergoing changes this year as the retailer promises its biggest transformation in the past decade.

Target announced this week that it would remodel more than 130 stores as well as open 30 new stores as it invests $5 billion in the changes. The 30 new stores will arrive in priority markets like Atlanta; Austin, Dallas and Houston, Texas; Charlotte, North Carolina; Chicago; Phoenix; Los Angeles; Miami; New York City; Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C.

Some of the anticipated changes will be bigger sections for fresh produce and frozen food, modern fixtures, updated bathrooms and updated checkout and self-checkout lanes.

“These investments are all about making Target an even easier, more inspiring and friendly place to shop,” Laurie Mahowald, senior vice president of Target Properties, said in a news release. “We’re evolving our stores in ways that reflect how guests shop today — from more intuitive layouts to expanded assortments — while also strengthening the role our stores play in fulfillment and our long-term growth.”

Target remodeling stores: What will change?

According to Target, many locations will see these changes:

  • An expanded dry grocery selection, as well as everyday essentials and pantry staples. Some locations will also get larger fresh and frozen food sections.
  • Modern décor and fixtures and specialty LED lighting.
  • Engaging merchandise displays throughout the store, including in apparel and accessories, beauty and home.
  • Updated spaces and expanded services to support Order Pickup, Drive Up and Exchanges & Returns, along with updates to traditional checkout and Express Self-Checkout lanes to improve their flow and convenience.
  • Modernized guest amenities including restrooms along with designated nursing spaces.
  • In select locations, Target is introducing natural refrigeration systems, more efficient lighting and HVAC systems that not only help reduce emissions but also energy costs.
