Mural at preschool born from car that crashed into building

A car crash left a preschool classroom in ruins, but the community transformed the aftermath into a symbol of hope and resilience with a vibrant mural.

CARROLLTON, Texas — The colorful mural outside Xplor Preschool in Carrollton wasn’t planned.  But neither was the reason it exists.

Behind it the mural filled with flowers, lady bugs, and a butterfly on a sunny day sits rubble, crushed classroom toys and even a car bumper. It’s the aftermath of a vehicle crashing into the building that houses one of the school’s two-year-old classrooms.

Fortunately, no one was hurt.

“I was very grateful that it was a day that we were not in operation,” Principal Karma Hill told WFAA.

Hill received a call from the Carrollton Police Department telling her that a car crashed into the school. More than 100 students from 6 weeks old to 12 years old attend Xplor Preschool of Carrollton. The first thing on Hill’s mind was their safety.

“We wanted to make sure they felt safe, and having a hole in your building and plywood up doesn’t necessarily give you that feel,” Hill said.

But the school’s community didn’t let the hole in the wall define their kids’ experience. Parents came together. First, they put up the plywood. Then, one parent, Tricia Rambo, picked up a brush and painted the mural every night after putting her own kids, who are also students at the school, to sleep.

“It took her about four days to complete, one day to seal it, and we were ready for Spring Fling,” said Hill.

Spring Fling is the school’s annual celebration of families. The mural became an unexpected centerpiece for 2026.

“When we had our Spring Fling, people thought it was a photo opportunity, which is actually what it’s turned into,” said Hill.

Tire tracks are still visible on the ground leading up to the crash site. Carrollton police have not confirmed whether they are investigating the incident.

But inside the school community, the focus has shifted to what grew out of the wreckage. Look closely at the mural and you’ll spot a purple butterfly: a symbol of growth and resilience.

“It takes a village,” Hill said, “and this is clearly the work of a village.”
