Legge will try to be the sixth driver — and the first woman — to attempt “The Double,” racing in the Indy 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day.
INDIANAPOLIS — Not only will Katherine Legge attempt to race in her fifth Indianapolis 500 on May 24, she plans to take a shot at auto racing history.
The veteran driver is aiming to become the first woman to complete “The Double” — racing at the Indianapolis 500 in the afternoon before taking on NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte, North Carolina, in the evening.
Legge’s primary sponsor, e.l.f. Cosmetics, announced the shot at history in a news release early Wednesday.
“Very few drivers ever get the opportunity to attempt ‘The Double,’ and I do not take that opportunity lightly,” Legge said in the release. “This challenge is about pushing through perceived limits, betting on yourse.l.f., taking risks and trying to do something unique. I am so incredibly grateful to e.l.f. for believing in what this moment represents and for building a community around it.”
Only five drivers — John Andretti, Kurt Busch, Robby Gordon, Kyle Larson and Tony Stewart — have attempted to drive in both races on the same day. Stewart, a Columbus, Indiana native, is the only driver to complete all 1,100 miles in the two races in one day. He accomplished the feat in 2001, finishing sixth at Indianapolis and third in Charlotte.
Larson attempted the double in each of the past two years, but after finishing 18th in a rain-delayed Indy 500 in 2024, he was unable to get to Charlotte before the Coca-Cola 600 was called due to rain.
Last year, Larson lost control in Turn 2 at IMS, crashing on Lap 92 of the 500. After flying to Charlotte, he got caught up in a wreck on Lap 246 of the NASCAR nightcap.
Legge has competed in eight races in the NASCAR Cup Series over the past two years, including seven starts last year. She finished 35th at Watkins Glen on Sunday in her only Cup race this year. In 2025, she finished 17th in the Brickyard 400 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
She first raced in the Indianapolis 500 in 2012, finishing 22nd. Legge was also part of the field of 33 at Indianapolis in 2013, 2023 and 2024.
The native of Guildford, England, will attempt to secure her spot in the Indianapolis 500 field when qualifications start Saturday, May 16. The fastest 15 drivers on Saturday will return on Sunday, May 17 to try to put their car on the pole for the 110th Running of the Indianapolis 500 a week later.
Qualifying for the Coca-Cola 600 is scheduled for 2:40 p.m. on Saturday, May 23.
