Dallas police say the incident happened April 23 afternoon in the 1700 block of Hemphill Dr.
DALLAS — An arrest has been made in the shooting death of a two-year-old child near a park in southern Dallas, police say.
Dallas Police officers were called to the 1700 block of Hemphill Drive at 1:20 p.m. April 23. Police say when they arrived, they found two-year-old Khy’ree Durell McDonald who had a gunshot wound.
Officials say McDonald was taken to the hospital, where she died.
“This is a heartbreaking and unacceptable loss,” says Dallas Police Chief Daneil Comeaux. “The death of a two-year-old is a senseless tragedy.”
Dallas police say this is an ongoing investigation and have not released what led up to the shooting.
Comeaux says, “As this investigation continues, we are committed to determining exactly what happened and ensuring accountability where it is warranted.”
Monday, Dallas police announced the arrests of 25-year-old Toderick Austin and 18-year-old Jayveion Burnley.
In a release, police said the investigation into Austin’s social media accounts led to a break in the case, but did not elaborate on what they found. They did say Bunley is a known associate of Austin.
Austin has been charged with multiple offenses, including Make Firearm Accessible to Child – Death/SBI and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon. Burnley is being charged with Possession of Prohibited Weapons.
Both Austin and Burnley remain in the Dallas County Jail.
