6 people hurt after shooting at post-prom party in Michigan

The shooting, at a VFW hall in Michigan, led to four people being hospitalized for gunshot wounds and two more being hospitalized after being hit by cars.

NORTON SHORES, Mich. — Multiple people were injured in an overnight shooting at a Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States hall in Michigan.

The event, a post-prom party, was being held in the rented out hall in Norton Shores, just south of Muskegon, Michigan.

The Fruitport Township Police Department told WZZM they were called to the area around 11:50 p.m. Saturday night about someone getting hit by a car. When they arrived at the hall, they were told a shooting had also happened in the parking lot.

Preliminary investigation showed multiple people discharged firearms. Four people were shot and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said two others were hit by vehicles in the road during the shooting. One of those people is seriously hurt. The ages of the victims are unknown.

Lisa Wisniewski-Bosworth, a neighbor who lives near the hall, told WZZM she heard 30 to 40 gunshots, followed by screaming. She said she saw young people running from the packed parking lot to their vehicles.

Within minutes of the shooting, she said more than 20 police and emergency vehicles from multiple agencies arrived at the scene and nearby residents were told to stay inside.

VFW Post 3734 Quartermaster George Kotkowicz said there were no VFW members at the post when the shooting happened.

VFW members were not allowed on site until around 9 a.m. on Sunday morning, when the Michigan State Police forensics team cleared the building.

No law enforcement officials have confirmed if they have any suspect information or if anyone is in custody. No other information is known at this time.
