Austin bar shooter was ‘lone actor’ in March mass-casualty attack, FBI reports

The gunman who fatally shot three people and wounded roughly a dozen more during a mass shooting in downtown Austin two months ago acted alone, FBI officials said Thursday, adding there’s no evidence he was working with or supported by a foreign terror group.

The FBI also revealed the shooter, Ndiaga Diagne, Senegal-born man who became a naturalized U.S. citizen, was never the subject of an FBI investigation prior to the shooting. What’s more, the 53-year-old legally purchased the handgun and rifle used during the shooting, which took place in the early morning hours of March 1 outside Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden.

“There is no evidence of outside direction or radicalization; rather, the investigation indicates an escalation in violent behavior in part tied to specific personal triggers and grievances related to U.S. and Israeli military actions involving Iran, culminating in a violent, impulsive attack,” the FBI wrote in its investigative update on the case.

The shooting followed shortly after the U.S. and Israel launched their joint attack on Iran. Diagne wore clothes bearing an Iranian flag design and the words “Property of Allah,” according to multiple reports.

About 400 local, state and federal law-enforcement personnel responded to the scene and participated in the initial stages of the investigation, according to the FBI. Police killed Diagne at the scene as he exchange gunfire with them.
