CARY, N.C. — Thieves in North Carolina recently got away with $45,000 worth of Pokémon and Magic cards from a family-owned card store.
Adam Reynolds in Cary, North Carolina, said thieves broke a window, then rifled through cases at his card shop, grabbing Pokémon and Magic cards.
“They went through the cases; they basically just shoveled cards in their arms into bags,” said Reynolds.
Ironically, thieves zeroed in on the Pokémon and Magic cards and didn’t even go over to the sports side of the card shop.
Both Pokémon and Magic cards gained steam again during the pandemic and have been seeing huge gains in popularity over the past few years. According to Card Ladder data, some Pokémon cards have more than doubled their value over the past year.
“Pokémon cards are the hottest things in the world right now. If you had cards from years ago, they’re worth maybe a couple thousand bucks, a couple hundred bucks,” Reynolds said. “It’s big money right now.”
“These are the jewels of the card world,” Reynolds said. “You can take one of these Pokémon cards or Magic cards and you can go sell them next door and nobody is going to know because there’s no way to really trace it.”
Reynolds did say they were able to get most of the stolen cards back, thanks to the local police department.
