San Antonio trio Donella Drive, known for its swirling blend of post-hardcore, prog, funk and other hard-edged sounds, has dropped a new track, “EYEVSEYE,” which comes with an appropriately eye-popping music video.

“EYEVSEYE,” the band’s first single since last year’s album Axon, continues its musical evolution and drive for the national spotlight. During recent months, the group — comprised of vocalist-guitarist Aiden Escalante,  bassist Andrew Salazar and recently recruited drummer Javier Trevino — has hopped onto opening slots with international touring acts, headlined Texas tours and racked up plenty of praise for its recent LP.

Even if “EYEVSEYE” strays from the Mastodon-esque sound that dominated Axon, the song radiates the essence of Donella Drive.

Groovy drum patterns, cascading guitar runs and a catchy chorus dominate the tune, which also comes with its share of musical surprises. A scratchy, mechanical-sounding instrumental interlude gives way to a heavy breakdown followed by guitar and bass solos.

Donella Drive debuted “EYEVSEYE” live in March when the trio opened for System of a Down tribute band System of a Brown and have been hyping the song’s official release since then. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dg3mZm2auB4&list=RDdg3mZm2auB4&start_radio=1

San Antonio videographer Fernando Villegas edited and captured the first performance of “EYEVSEYE” at the March show. That footage is at the core of the track’s music video, which looks like what being in a mosh pit feels like. Even though.

Even though, it’s primarily a performance clip, a hallucinatory element runs through it thanks to flashing lights, quick camera cuts and backlit images of the band.

“EYEVSEYE” is available on all music streaming platforms, and the music video is also on YouTube. Chris Mora, a Donella Drive collaborator who’s also worked with Upon A Burning, Life Cycles and Kim Dracula, mixed and mastered the track.
