A deadly crash snarled traffic in Baytown on Thursday. The crash forced the closure of the southbound lanes of the Fred Hartman Bridge.
BAYTOWN, Texas — The southbound lanes of the Fred Hartman Bridge were shut down on Thursday due to a deadly crash, according to officials.
While details of the crash were unknown, City of Baytown officials said the lanes of Highway 146 would be closed until the crash scene was cleared. Drivers were advised to take alternate routes.
The crash was reported around 12:30 p.m., and about an hour later, traffic started moving by in one lane.
According to Harris County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Terry Garza, a motorcycle was involved in the crash, and traffic was backed up to Lefevre.
Here are some detour options:
Detour via Spur 330, I-10, I-610, and SH-225
This official detour route reroutes southbound SH 146 traffic by taking Spur 330 west, connecting to I-10 westbound, then heading south on I-610 before taking SH-225 eastbound toward La Porte, allowing you to bypass the Fred Hartman Bridge closure and continue south with minimal backtracking. Advantages include clear signage and state-recommended directions, though the route can become congested during peak hours.
Local Baytown surface street detours to I-10 or SH-330
For those familiar with Baytown’s local roads, using surface streets (such as Decker Drive, Garth Road, or Main Street) to access I-10 or Spur 330 can offer more flexibility and possibly faster travel, especially for local destinations, but may involve multiple traffic lights, stop-and-go driving, and potential congestion as more drivers seek shortcuts.
This is a developing story, and updates will be added to this article when they become available.
