An Alvarado police officer was shot in the neck responding to a call near Prairieland Detention Center but was treated and released from the hospital, officials say.

ALVARADO, Texas — An Alvarado police officer was shot in the neck while responding to a suspicious person call near the Prairieland Detention Center, law enforcement officials confirmed.

Prairieland Detention Center is an ICE facility.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) said in a Facebook post that the Alvarado Police Department was dispatched at approximately 10:56 p.m. Friday, July 4, to the 1200 block of Sunflower Lane.

When officers got there, they say they saw a suspicious person who appeared to be carrying a gun, JCSO said. As the first officer attempted to engage with this person, multiple suspects opened fire on the officer, according to JCSO.

The officer was shot in the neck at least once, JCSO said. The officer was flown to Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth, treated, and released, officials say.

The suspects fled the scene, JCSO said, and several armed suspects were taken into custody by the Alvarado Police Department, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, and neighboring agencies.

JCSO said the motives of the suspects remain unclear.

The Texas Rangers, along with the Alvarado Police Department, encourage anyone with information related to this incident to contact the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office criminal investigations division at 817-790-0910.
