Wrong-way drivers force major change near Houston-area school

TxDOT is adding traffic officers at Falcon Ridge Elementary after parents raised safety concerns about wrong-way drivers during drop-off and pickup.

HUFFMAN, Texas — The Texas Department of Transportation is stepping in after drivers were seen going the wrong way in a school pickup and drop-off line near Falcon Ridge Elementary in Huffman.

KHOU 11 News first reported on this problem on Monday, with traffic backing up into a construction zone on FM 2100 and creating safety concerns for parents and students.

Traffic enforcement plan starts after Labor Day

TxDOT says parents can expect to see officers directing traffic beginning the morning after Labor Day.

According to TxDOT, traffic will be staged on the closed northbound pavement off FM 2100. Officers will control access to the school Monday through Friday from 7:15 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. and again from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Earlier this week, parents told KHOU 11 how traffic often stops along the two-lane highway during drop-off and pickup. Some drivers were caught going the wrong way to get around the line — a move parents say is dangerous.

$55 million widening project

TxDOT also provided an update on the $55 million project to expand FM 2100 from two lanes to four. Work began in February 2022 and is expected to be completed by winter 2026.

In the meantime, the agency says it coordinated the traffic enforcement plan to address concerns around Falcon Ridge Elementary.

TxDOT response

“Putting children at risk, that drew my concern for sure. So I reached out to my North Harris area office and I asked hey what can we do, what are we doing. Have you gone out there? Have you seen it? Parents are complaining,” said Bambi Hall, PIO for TxDOT Houston District, North Harris County and South Houston.
