What to know about the Avis data breach settlement offering up to $5,000 to customers

Customers affected by the 2024 breach have until June 21 to file claims for losses or cash payments tied to exposed personal information.

WASHINGTON — Customers affected by a 2024 data breach involving Avis Budget Group could receive payments of up to $5,000 in losses tied to the incident, thanks to a new settlement

The settlement stems from a lawsuit alleging that hackers accessed customers’ personal information during a security incident that occurred between Aug. 3 and Aug. 6, 2024.

According to the settlement website, exposed information may have included customer names, driver’s license information, credit card numbers and expiration dates, birthdates and phone numbers.

Avis has denied wrongdoing but agreed to the proposed settlement to resolve the litigation.

The settlement applies to U.S. residents whose personal information was compromised in the breach. Eligible customers can submit claims for reimbursement of documented out-of-pocket losses connected to the breach, including fraud or identity theft expenses, up to $5,000.

Customers who do not have documented losses may still qualify for a cash payment from the settlement fund. Those payments will be distributed evenly among approved claimants after expenses and reimbursements are paid.

Claims must be submitted online or postmarked by June 21, according to the settlement administrator.

A final court hearing is scheduled for July 28 in the federal court in New Jersey.
