Washington, D.C., bus driver wins $5M lottery, plans to buy mom a house

A Washington, D.C. school bus driver won $5 million in the Maryland Lottery and has plans on how he wants to spend some of the money.

WASHINGTON D.C., DC — A Washington, D.C. school bus driver is celebrating big after winning $5 million in the Maryland Lottery.

Maurice Williams was on his way to work when he stopped at a 7-Eleven store in Hyattsville, Maryland, to cash in a $50 prize. He used his winnings to purchase another ticket and sat in his car to play.

“I didn’t notice I had a matching number at first, until I scanned it,” Williams told the Maryland Lottery. “It’s crazy because the matching number was 59 and I just turned 59 the other day.”

He said when he scanned the scratcher, he learned he had won the LUXE game’s top prize.

“I just sat there stuck, I mean, I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “I had to get my head straight.”

The first thing he did was call his mom. After sharing the exciting news and calming down a bit, he went back to work. On his lunch break, he set up an appointment to claim his prize.

While Williams hasn’t decided what he will spend his newfound wealth on, he knows one thing for sure. He is going to buy his mom a house.

Williams isn’t the only big winner. The 7-Eleven that sold the ticket in Hyattsville receives a $5,000 bonus.

The LUXE scratch-off launched in February with three $5 million top prizes, and Maurice claimed the first one, leaving two more yet to be claimed, lottery officials said.
