Violent Grimes County inmate escapes hospital on Cross Park Drive in Austin, TX

The Grimes County sheriff asked for the public’s help finding escaped inmate McArthur Mathis, who has a violent criminal history in multiple Texas counties.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Grimes County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help finding an escaped inmate with a violent criminal history and known ties across multiple Texas counties.

Authorities say McArthur Deashy Mathis, a 6-foot-2-inch-tall Black male with brown eyes, a bald head and multiple tattoos on his head and neck, escaped from the Cross Creek Psychiatric and Addiction Hospital in Austin around 8 p.m. on Wednesday. He was last seen wearing a navy blue shirt and teal pants.

Mathis reportedly kicked open a back door at the facility and scaled a 6-foot fence to flee the property, located at 8402 Cross Park Drive in northeast Austin.

Mathis had been in custody since Jan. 2, following his arrest by the Grimes County Sheriff’s Office on multiple warrants out of the Victoria Police Department and additional charges including unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon causing serious injury to a family member, obstruction or retaliation, deadly conduct and burglary of a habitation.

Authorities said Mathis is also a registered sex offender and may be attempting to return to known contacts in Grimes, Lavaca, Brazos or Gonzales counties.
