University of Houston football sees $9M loss in 2023

The University of Houston football program reported a $9.06 million loss in 2023 despite tripling its revenue.

HOUSTON — College football is a big moneymaker at many Power 4 conference universities, but the University of Houston is an exception.

In fact, UH’s football program was one of the least profitable in the Big 12 Conference in 2023 — the most recently available data — according to annual financial reports obtained by the Houston Business Journal via a public records request. The university earned nearly $17.87 million on football during its first Big 12 season, but expenses totaled $26.93 million, resulting in a net loss of $9.06 million. UH was one of only two universities to lose money on football during the 2023 season.

Additionally, Houston was unable to earn a profit in 2023 despite a big jump in football revenue. UH earned more than tripled its football revenue in its first Big 12 season compared to its last American Athletic Conference season, jumping 369.3% from nearly $3.81 million. Expenses rose by approximately 25.5%.
