TxDOT announces weekend closures on SH 99 for widening project

Crews are removing overhead signs and columns.

HOUSTON — Major closures are coming to a portion of State Highway 99/Grand Parkway North this weekend as part of a $55.7 million widening project, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) announced Friday.

Crews will shut down key sections of both westbound and eastbound lanes between Friday night, June 27, and Sunday morning, June 29, to remove overhead signs and columns. Temporary signage will be in place to guide drivers during the closures, which begin Friday at 8 p.m. and are expected to wrap up by 9 a.m. Sunday.

The westbound mainlanes from Champion Forest to SH 249 will be fully closed from 8 p.m. Friday until 7 a.m. Saturday. Drivers will be detoured via the Champion Forest exit, continuing along the frontage road and turning right at Boudreaux Road/Gleannloch Forest Drive to re-enter SH 99.

Then, from 8 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday, eastbound mainlanes from just west of SH 249 to Gleannloch Forest Drive will be shut down. Several direct connectors will also be closed during that time:

Drivers will need to use frontage roads and turnarounds at Boudreaux Road to re-enter the highway.

The construction is part of a larger project aimed at expanding a 5.7-mile stretch of SH 99 through Tomball—from SH 249 to Kuykendahl Road—from four lanes to six. The project began in June 2024 and is expected to be completed by winter 2028. Brice Construction and Design LLC is leading the work.

TxDOT is telling drivers to expect delays and consider alternate routes. Law enforcement will be present to assist with traffic control.

“TxDOT appreciates your patience and reminds you to please drive with caution through work zones and be on the lookout for work crews and their equipment,” the agency said in a statement.

Residents near the project area are also urged to be cautious while driving, walking, or biking near any ongoing construction.
