Trump’s proposed tariffs may affect Houston ports

Trump announced 30% tariffs for the EU and Mexico, 35% for Canada, and 50% for Brazil ahead of the Aug. 1 deadline.

HOUSTON — New proposed tariffs have been announced in waves over the past week as the Aug. 1 deadline for reciprocal tariffs to restart approaches.

Most recently, President Donald Trump posted letters on Truth Social to the leaders of the European Union and Mexico saying he will set their tariffs at 30%.

Also in the past week, Trump posted that he plans to increase the tariff on Canadian goods to 35% and plans to increase Brazil’s tariff to 50% due to a trial against former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

The European Union and the three other countries are among the top 15 importers to the Houston-Galveston customs district, which spans from Corpus Christi to Galveston and the Port of Houston, as well as inland to the George Bush Intercontinental Airport, according to data from the U.S. International Trade Commission.
