Trump’s bill boosts funding for 2026 World Cup host cities

The bill allocates $625 million for 2026 World Cup safety and security, which Houston will benefit from.

HOUSTON — The 2026 FIFA World Cup host cities, including Houston, are about to get a significant boost.

President Donald Trump’s recently passed “big beautiful bill” allocates $625 million for safety and security for the 11 U.S. host cities. The funding eases the financial burdens of hosting the massive tournament, said Chris Canetti, president of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Houston Committee. Safety and security is the largest expense associated with the event, he said during the Harris County Houston Sports Authority board of directors’ meeting July 9.

“This is going to have a major positive impact on our budget and how we’re funding the event, and it really eases the financial pressures on the host committee,” Canetti said. We were teetering in terms of being close to breaking even — our goal is not to profit, but we need to make sure we’re not losing money — and now this puts us in a much safer financial position.”
