Traffic signal outage on Richmond at West Loop causing traffic problems

Traffic signals at Richmond and the West Loop were either flashing red or not working at all as of Thursday.

HOUSTON, Texas — One might say that navigating Houston’s traffic is a challenge even when things are working right.

But when things are wonky, it’s even worse.

This intersection has been a nightmare for four weeks,” driver Mabel Amaya said.

Signals at Richmond Avenue and the feeder just inside the West Loop, and those at Richmond and Post Oak just outside the West Loop, were either flashing red or not working at all on Thursday.

The situation created chaotic three and four-way stops.

“But people have a lot of trouble respecting that,” Amaya said. “So, basically, you’re just in for an adventure.”

The view from a Vape Time location on the corner is the troubled area, and its cameras caught a dramatic crash just last week when a driver got struck before rolling over.

Fortunately, store manager Brianna Carlin told us the person appeared to escape serious injury.

“It’s really bad,” Carlin said. “Even I’m scared to come to work. There’s been so many crashes, a cop has gotten hit, cars have flipped over.”

Pedestrian crossing signals were also affected as Pam Valesquez and her family found out on Thursday afternoon.

“Because it’s so busy and we just kind of ran for our lives pretty much,” Valesquez said. “They were nice enough to let us through, though.”

We initially contacted the City of Houston about the ongoing issues, but a spokesperson told us it’s up to TxDOT since it’s related to the recent 59/610 overhaul.

Then, TxDOT said the city manages all existing signals, although newer infrastructure may be operational as soon as next week.

“We just need somebody to come and have a proper look at the lights,” Amaya said. “I think they have been fixed a couple of times, but whatever fixing they’ve done, it’s not enough.”

Drivers are generally encouraged to report issues like this to 311.

TxDOT said it doesn’t hurt to contact them as well if you’re unsure of who is responsible.

We got this statement from District G Houston City Council Member Mary Nan Huffman:

“Houston drivers are no strangers to construction, but the frequently malfunctioning traffic light at Richmond and Loop 610 is turning a frustrating situation into a dangerous one. TXDOT must act swiftly to repair this critical signal and ensure that traffic can flow safely in this area.”
