Toddler critically injured by vehicle in Cleveland, Texas

A 2-year-old boy is in critical condition after a relative accidentally hit him with a vehicle in Cleveland, prompting an ongoing investigation.

CLEVELAND, Texas — A 2-year-old boy is in critical condition after being hit by a vehicle in Cleveland Sunday, according to the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office.

It happened on a private driveway at a residence on Road 3548 near Plum Grove Road.

LCSO said the toddler was accidentally hit by a relative. After realizing what had happened, the child’s parents picked up their son and made their way to the hospital.

While on the way there, the family spotted an LCSO patrol unit and flagged it down. Corporal Rosas, who was operating the unit, evaluated the child and, after noticing his breathing was shallow, called for more units and EMS support.

Cpl. Rosas transferred the mother and toddler to a nearby Texas Department of Public Safety unit, which transported them to HCA Cleveland Hospital, according to LCSO.

The child was then transported by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital and was taken into surgery.

The sheriff’s office said it’s launching an investigation into the incident.

“Our hearts go out to the toddler and his family during this deeply tragic time. We are keeping them in our prayers. Cpl. Rosas and all the deputies involved acted with urgency and professionalism, doing everything possible to get this child the critical care he needed,” said Captain David Meyers, spokesperson for LCSO.
